Transport for Greater Manchester wins Road Safety in the Community Award.
Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) won the Road Safety in the Community Award at the UK Fleet Champions Awards 2022, for work to increase the safety of vulnerable road users, including people who walk or cycle, and encourage active travel.
Funded by Safer Roads Greater Manchester Partnership and delivered alongside the Nationwide Cycling Academy, the Safe Urban Driver course was first introduced in February 2022. Classroom-based theory modules teach drivers about the changing streetscape and identifying vulnerable road users, before informing them about safely sharing the roads and using safety equipment. The practical module provides drivers with real experience of cycling on roads in the centre of Manchester, which increases their awareness of hazards that can be encountered by people who cycle or walk.
At the time of entering the UK Fleet Champions Awards, TfGM had run 17 Safe Urban Driver courses, and delivered its training to 130 drivers. The attendees were asked to provide feedback at the end of their training, and TfGM found that, of the 116 attendees that responded to the survey, 85% said that the course changed their attitudes towards vulnerable road users.
TfGM is collecting feedback from drivers three months after completion of the course, to assess changes in behaviour and attitude. This feedback will help TfGM to discern whether the course helped drivers to continue to feel safer and more aware of other road users.
The Road Safety in the Community award, sponsored by Samsara, was presented to Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) at the UK Fleet Champions Awards 2022. The award recognises the organisation that has done the most to improve and encourage safe and healthy mobility in its local community.
