Nottingham City Transport

Nottingham City Transport is the principal bus service operation in the city of Nottingham in the UK.

Until relatively recently, Nottingham City Transport took a largely traditional approach to bus driver recruitment, whereby driver skills and knowledge were evaluated during a short period of instructor-supervised driving. However, this approach was highly subjective, limited in scope and difficult to correlate with consistent real-world driver behaviour.

“The tests conducted during the recruitment process provide a better indication of real-world driving behaviour and has seen improved confidence and competence among drivers and senior management.”

In 2009, Nottingham City Transport introduced the DriverMetrics tool to its recruitment process and began using aptitude tests that indicate driver attitude, skills and confidence to identify any underlying risk factors (e.g. behavioural factors) that should be addressed during the induction training period.

Results

Between 2009 and 2016, it assessed 1,100 potential freight drivers using the DriverMetrics tool and recruited 600 new drivers. In the first six years of using the tool as part of its recruitment process, the organisation saw a significant (more than 20%) decrease in the frequency of ‘at fault’ crashes among its drivers.

Conclusions

Nottingham City Transport feels that the tests conducted during the recruitment process provide a better indication of real-world driving behaviour and has seen improved confidence and competence among drivers and senior management.
