MiX Telematics and Wincanton

MiX Telematics delivers solutions to customers in more than 120 countries across six continents. Approximately 812,000 mobile assets – from trucks and buses, to vans, cars, motorbikes and trailers – are actively managed by MiX Telematics. The organisation has a network of more than 130 fleet partners worldwide, including Wincanton, a British logistics firm that employs approximately 17,700 people across more than 200 sites and operates a 3,600-strong fleet of vehicles.

In line with its ‘safety first’ approach to business, in 2018 Wincanton decided to introduce a telematics solution to improve driving style and reduce insurance costs. Wincanton chose MiX Fleet Manager with MiX DriveMate live driver feedback, MiX Vision camera telematics and MiX 3D digital tachograph download.

MiX DriveMate is an in-vehicle driver display that uses LED lights to communicate with the driver when they participate in unsafe behaviours, such as braking, harsh cornering or speeding.

To ensure successful behavioural change, Wincanton wanted to make sure drivers were engaged with the need to be safe on the roads. This was achieved by the use of MyMiX – an app that scores drivers based on their driving events and ranks them, letting them see where improvement is needed.

The MiX Vision solution serves two purposes: increasing safety and decreasing insurance costs. In-vehicle and external cameras capture footage of road incidents, and events are analysed by Wincanton’s driver debrief team to improve safety performance.

“In line with its ‘safety first’ approach to business, in 2018 Wincanton decided to introduce a telematics solution to improve driving style and reduce insurance costs.”

Results

Wincanton reported tangible results within six months of implementing the MiX Telematics solutions, including improvements in safety and increased efficiency.

Harsh acceleration, braking and cornering have all decreased, with the largest decrease (85%) observed in harsh braking. Fuel spend has also dropped by 14%. Harsh cornering decreased by 30% and harsh acceleration decreased by 57%.

MiX Telematics and Wincanton received the Fleet Safety Partnership Award in 2019. This award recognises the partnership of a fleet service provider or operator with another organisation that has delivered the most outstanding results to improve fleet safety.
