Mick Kiely of TES 2000 wins Road Risk Manager of the Year Award.
TES 2000 fleet manager, Mick Kiely, was presented the Road Risk Manager of the Year Award at the UK Fleet Champions Awards 2022. Kiely joined TES 2000 in 2020 as a fleet manager, and worked to update safety procedures, driver handbooks, and telematics systems, resulting in safer procedures and drivers.
TES 2000 is a contractor for the rail industry and undertakes maintenance for the National Rail network. Its work includes track renewal, electrification, and possessions management. With its employees driving to sites to carry out work, safety on both the roads and sites is a high priority. When he began his role as fleet manager, Mick Kiely introduced improved safety measures to ensure the wellbeing of his employees.
Under Kiely’s instruction, a driver app was introduced, to confirm that key vehicle safety checks were being carried out daily. The app demands a real-time response to resolve maintenance issues and complete routine services, reducing the rates of maintenance breakdowns, and helping TES 2000 to achieve its goal of “Everyone home safe everyday”. E-learning modules were introduced to ensure continuous development for drivers, with a focus on vulnerable road user training, and speed awareness.
To reduce environmental impact, Kiely developed a travel allowance scheme, which encourages employees to use alternative methods of transport to get to and from work, resulting in reducing the fleet by 35 vehicles. Kiely also worked with TES 2000 senior management to introduce three electric vehicles to the company fleet.
Kiely’s work with employees has changed driver attitudes and reduced at-fault incidents, damage, and fuel costs. Between 2020 and 2022, at-fault damage costs reduced by 60%. Over the same period, and despite rising fuel prices, overall costs for fuel reduced by 20%, and insurance premiums fell by 20%.
Bianca Molloy, people director, TES 2000, said: “As the People Director at TES 2000, witnessing Mick Kiely’s journey has been remarkable. His unique approach to fleet management, focusing on driver well-being and environmental sustainability, aligns perfectly with our company’s values.
“Mick’s innovation in operational safety and efficiency has set a new standard in the industry. His achievement in winning the Road Risk Manager of the Year Award at the UK Fleet Champions Awards 2022 is a resounding endorsement of his visionary leadership and commitment to excellence.”
Kiely’s performance at TES 2000 is a culmination of 27 years’ work in the fleet industry. He was presented the Road Risk Manager of the Year Award at the UK Fleet Champions Awards 2022. The award, sponsored by QBE, celebrates the risk or fleet manager that has implemented exemplary road risk management policies with proven results.
