Kieren Tickner (Road and Musculoskeletal Risk Safety Manager, Openreach)

Winner: Road Risk Manager of the Year Award, 2021

Kieren Tickner won the Road Risk Manager of the Year Award due to his outstanding commitment to improving training conditions in Openreach. In the last year, he worked relentlessly to overhaul how new recruits are educated, making the process more engaging by introducing virtual reality technology and shifting focus to address the areas of largest risk for the organisation.

After identifying an issue with speeding, Kieren took the initiative to develop a new speed awareness course, focused on education rather than punitive measures. He has also worked closely with managers to educate them on how to manage road risk and improve the safety of their drivers.

Over the first two UK lockdowns, Openreach implemented COVID-secure training and risk assessments, which were issued to more than 850 new recruits. This was due to Kieren’s efforts to redesign the training to ensure new starters could still get hands-on driving experience and be professionally assessed.

His proactive efforts have reduced the number of crashes involving Openreach’s drivers, and improved how employees view road risk.
