Air Products wins Company Driver Safety Award (Small/medium fleet) at the UK Fleet Champions Awards 2023.
Air Products has a fleet of more than 270 vehicles and over 350 drivers who make deliveries to customers across the UK. The organisation introduced the OSA programme to improve the safety and wellbeing of its drivers.
The OSA programme targets drivers who are concerned about their excessive feelings of tiredness, or inability to concentrate. Working with the Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Partnership Group, Air Products invites drivers to complete a questionnaire. If OSA is suspected, further tests are carried out, and Air Products provides a fast track to treatment, then managed by the driver’s GP.
Air Products noted that professional drivers are a high-risk group for sleep apnoea, and fatigue is recognised as a major cause of road accidents in the UK. Deliveries are made 24/7 and some drivers work early mornings, late evenings or during the night. They can also experience stressful situations and Air Products recognises the need to provide health and wellness tools to its employees and their families. The OSA programme is part of this wider initiative.
In total, approximately 400 drivers, managers, and supervisors at Air Products are aware of the OSA programme, and eight drivers had completed the screening process by May 2023. One driver was diagnosed with OSA and noticed an immediate change in energy levels and alertness after starting treatment. This driver is now an advocate for Air Products’ OSA programme and is sharing his experience with other drivers.
“The OSA programme reinforces Air Products’ commitment to its goal of being the safest industrial gas company in the world and that every employee should go home from work in the same condition as they arrived. We are thrilled to have received this prestigious industry award as a testament to the importance of the OSA programme and we hope that it will encourage more drivers to take part,” comments Mark Pawsey, UK Distribution Manager.
The Company Driver Safety Award (small/medium fleet), sponsored by Fleetmaster, was presented to Air Products at the UK Fleet Champions Awards 2023. The award celebrates the private sector organisation that has implemented initiatives that effectively enable drivers to be safe.
