Dr Will Murray Award presented to Air Products for its Fleet Strategy.
Air Products was presented with the Dr Will Murray Award for Analysis and Action at the UK Fleet Champions Awards 2022, in recognition of its work over the last two years to prevent incidents involving its drivers and reduce the use of resources.
The industrial gas supplier, which runs a fleet of 278 trucks and 353 drivers, has implemented a new fleet strategy to ensure it meets the strict driver and vehicle standards set out by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), and introduced a programme of driver training focused on improving safety and working towards the business goal of zero incidents.
By encouraging their drivers to be more aware of their surroundings and carry out dynamic risk assessments, Air Products has reduced its ‘lost time’ incidents by 40% since 2021. The number of employees taking time off work due to injuries has decreased too, resulting in fewer delayed customer deliveries.
Training drivers on the importance of fuel-efficient and safe driving led to Air Products’ average miles per gallon (mpg) increase by almost 6%, from 9.4 to 9.95mpg, which is above the current industry standard of 9.5mpg. Alongside the reduction in fuel consumption, Air Products saw its drivers make fewer infringements on their tachographs too.
Air Products continues its work to improve driver safety by developing Microlearning safety training modules for employees in multiple languages, providing the option to learn in their native language if preferred. The Air Products team are also creating systems to help drivers move safely when in challenging delivery locations.
Air Products has become the first industrial gas company to be accredited with Earned Recognition, further underlining the company’s commitment to driver safety and the environment.
On winning the award, Air Products stated:
“We are very proud to receive this award for the introduction of our microlearning training programme – covering all aspects of a driver’s job with a focus around safety – and for achieving Earned Recognition status with 100% in all Key Performance Indicators.
“Whilst improving fuel efficiency and reducing incidents, carbon emissions, costs and tachograph infringements, our strategy clearly highlights our focus on tackling environmental issues and ensuring our employees, customers and communities are safe.”
