New guidance to put safe systems at the heart of fleet manager decisions

12 March 2021

Global Fleet Champions has published a new tool to help fleet managers contribute to a world where no-one is killed or seriously injured in a road crash.

The latest webinar-based factsheet from Global Fleet Champions focuses on the safe systems approach to road safety, and how fleets can use it to minimise collisions involving their vehicles.

The factsheet, sponsored by Lytx, covers why safe systems are important and how improvements to roads, speeds, vehicles and road use work together to make roads safer for everyone.

Safe systems is a shared approach to road safety that was developed in Sweden but is now used around the world.

The approach has four pillars:

  • People make mistakes that will lead to death and serious injury;
  • The human body has a limited ability to tolerate crash forces before harm occurs;
  • Road safety is a shared responsibility; and
  • Different parts of the system work together to prevent road crashes and make roads safer for everyone.

The guidance is based on a webinar broadcast in 2020 that featured advice from road safety experts.

Global Fleet Champions factsheets are for anyone who manages people who drive for work, regardless of budget, fleet size or vehicle type, and are designed to give managers short, simple advice on key road safety topics.

Scott Williams, head of programme delivery at Brake, the road safety charity, said: “Every road death is a preventable tragedy. Everyone has the right to move around safely and healthily. By designing roads, vehicles and policies in such a way that mistakes can never lead to a crash, we can all play a part in achieving a world where no-one is killed or injured on the road. We hope this factsheet proves useful to fleet managers in helping us work towards this goal.”

Damian Penney, vice president of Lytx, Europe said: ‘‘As an industry, we have a responsibility to come together in order to share knowledge and insights that can be used to help fleet managers minimise risk and possible incidents. Being part of that conversation is incredibly important to Lytx and we are delighted to support Global Fleet Champions in the delivery of vital resources that can help make the roads safer for everyone.’’
