Speed management is the subject of the latest factsheet for fleet managers published by Global Fleet Champions.
Advice for fleet managers: Managing driver speed highlights the dangers that excess speed can pose as well as the steps that can be taken to mitigate the risk.
The factsheet covers why people may be tempted to speed, how speed affects crash risk, and technologies such as intelligent speed assistance (ISA) that help manage it.
Speed plays a part in all road crashes, and is one of the main risk factors for work-related driving.
The risk of death for car occupants is 20 times higher in a crash at 80km/h compared with a crash at 30km/h.
This resource is based on a webinar called Spotlight on managing driver speed that was broadcast in March 2021 and delivered by Dr Shaun Helman, chief scientist for behavioural and data sciences at the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL).
Global Fleet Champions Spotlights are short, focused webinars to help anyone who employs people who drive for work to manage road risk within their organisation. Each Spotlight provides in-depth insight into a particular topic relevant to your fleet safety programme.
Scott Williams, head of programme delivery at Brake, the road safety charity, said: “Even though mot people understand that speeding is dangerous, many still either choose to drive over the speed limit, or at inappropriate speeds for the road they are travelling on. This puts both them and other road users in serious danger.
“We hope fleet managers can use this new factsheet to learn more about the risks associated with speed, and what measures they can take to reduce the danger that speed poses to us all.”
