Distracted drivers are the focus of new Global Fleet Champions factsheet

8 October 2020

Global Fleet Champions has published its latest factsheet to help fleet managers tackle driver distraction.

Advice for fleet managers: Driver distraction features key information for fleet safety professionals about one of the largest causes of road crashes in the world.

The factsheet explains why driver distraction is dangerous as well as the different types of distraction and how to reduce the risks they pose.

It is based on the webinar ‘Spotlight on driver distraction’, which was broadcast in May 2020 and sponsored by Reflex Vehicle Hire.

Distraction overloads drivers’ brains with more information than they can handle while remaining focused on the driving task.

Distracted drivers are less likely to notice and respond to hazards, so are more likely to be involved in a fatal or serious crash.

Global Fleet Champions factsheets are for anyone who manages people who drive for work, regardless of budget, fleet size or vehicle type, and are designed to give managers basic, easy to follow advice on key road safety topics.

Scott Williams, head of programme delivery at Brake, the road safety charity, said: “Distraction is one of the biggest dangers on our roads and even a moment’s distraction can have fatal consequences.

“It’s essential that fleets have good driver distraction policies to ensure their employees understand the risks of driving distracted. We hope that fleet managers find this factsheet informative and can use it to implement effective policies and procedures in their own organisations.”

Lisa Spong, sales director at Reflex Vehicle Hire, said: “Distraction is talked about as one of the ‘Big Three – speeding, distraction and fatigue’. These are all important elements to combat when running a safe fleet. Drivers unknowingly and subconsciously perform bad habits while on the road, which can put them and others at risk. Tackling the issue with technology can be a useful solution, but we believe safety starts with culture. It is critical drivers are on-board with a company policy that promotes safe driving. Global Fleet Champions make the perfect partner for resources to help with problems occurring in fleets.”
