Safe road use is everyone’s responsibility. Whether you drive or ride to work, responsible road users consider how best to share the road with others to minimise the risk of a crash. If you employ people who drive for work, find out how you can plan journeys so that every trip made on your behalf accounts for the other people and vehicles you share the road with.
In this webinar you will learn:
- How to prepare drivers to share the road with large vehicles
- How to plan journeys to protect vulnerable road users
- Schemes to teach drivers to better understand the challenges faced by other road users.
Presentations will cover:
Presentation 1. Sharing the road with large vehicles (10 minutes)
Scott Tidwell, Virginia Tech Transportation Institute
This presentation will provide an introductory overview to the concepts drivers need to understand to safely operate around larger vehicles. It will outline the primary risks of travelling near a large vehicle, such as bus and truck blind spots, and will offer basic advice such as how to overtake safely.
Presentation 2: Protecting vulnerable road users (10 minutes)Andy Price, Fleet Safety Management
This presentation will help attendees ensure that all journeys made on their behalf are planned to protect people who are more vulnerable, such as those who walk or cycle. It will discuss routing and scheduling policies to avoid busy areas, minimising time pressures on drivers, and how to make sure the operational needs of the business don’t conflict with safety requirements. It will also touch on equipping vehicles with technology to make them more compatible with safe streets.
Presentation 3: Case study (10 minutes)
Julie Smith, Transport for Greater Manchester
This case study presentation will share examples from an organisation that has successfully utilised an exchanging places initiative to improve its drivers’ awareness of the experiences of other road users. It will highlight the reasons why the organisation decided to take part in the initiative, how it was run, the lessons learned by drivers, and any tangible results for the organisation’s safety record.
